Although the main event is always going to be beer, food plays an extremely important part in the Oktoberfest experience. The annual German event actually celebrates the harvest, yet Oktoberfest food is often overlooked for all the steins of beer. Natives often say that to drink beer like a German one must eat like a German! So here are some of the more popular Oktoberfest foods.
Spaetzle:
a fluffy and tender flour dumpling that has a unique shape — the dough goes through a ricer, colander or grater to create drop like noodles.
Pork Schnitzel:
Traditionally, German schnitzel uses tenderized pork, but other popular varieties include chicken, turkey, beef and veal. Whichever variety, you can't go wrong with this fried to golden, deliciously crispy dish!
Sauerkraut:
Sauerkraut is made with fermented cabbage, which may not sound too appealing, but trust us, this classic sandwich topping is healthy as well as tangy and delicious! Got yourself some leftover cabbage? Shred it, salt it and let it sit for an easy topping for hot dogs, pulled pork or a simple, sour side dish.
Kartoffelpuffer:
These mouthwatering crispy German potato pancakes are known as Reiberdatschi in Bavaria. Traditionally, they are served with apple sauce but for the more savoury inclined among us, they are also delicious with sour cream, smoked salmon and chives!
Obatzda:
Looking for something to soak up the alcohol? Look no further than the famous Bavarian beer cheese dip which is made with Camembert and Weissbier or a dark lager such as Dunkel. Served with rye bread, radishes and other veggies or pretzels. A classic Oktoberfest appetizer!
Pretzels:
Oktoberfest wouldn’t be Oktoberfest without an offering of warm chewy pretzels! These fist sized pieces of crispy dough are a very popular snack during the fall. They are available in sweet and savory flavors, with the savory varieties often used as a side dish served with weisswurst (Bavarian white sausage) to provide a more filling snack.
Vanilla Bavarian Cream:
Bavarian cream is a simple chilled dessert that's typically served with sauce or garnished with fruit. Caramelized apples and homemade almond crumble add texture to this must-try treat.
Apfelstrudel:
Few foods are as distinctively German as apple strudel. During the festival this sweet treat is very popular. It’s a dough pocket filled with grated cooking apples, raisin, cinnamon and sugar. If that weren’t indulgent enough, apfelstudel is topped with custard or cream.
Now, you may have noticed, this is not Munich, nor is our Oktoberfest on nearly the same scale as our German friends, but we will honor their delicious food as best we can! Once you have gorged yourself on beers and sausages at Oktoberfest, you should continue your path of indulgence onto the sweets. Giant gingerbread hearts known as Lebkuchenhertz are more a souvenir than a snack, but sweet treats abound for those more attracted to sugar than alcohol.
Gluten free, lactose free, nut free and just plain delicious!
Go nuts for donuts.
Glutenfreeanj will be offering gluten-free, nut-free and lactose-free donuts all day long. The donuts are safe for those with celiac disease or those with gluten intolerance and are baked and not fried, providing a healthier twist on a classic treat. $4 per donut Enjoy the sugar rush that goes along with desserts at Oktoberfest.
Now if this doesn’t get your mouth watering then we’re not sure what will! To experience these German culinary delights, and of course a beer or two, maybe a schnapps or wine, and a live band to entertain you – what’s not to love about Aurora’s Oktoberfest? October 5, 2019.
