ABOUT OKTOBERFEST

Oktoberfest began on October 12, 1810 to celebrate the marriage of crown prince Ludwig, who later became king Ludwig 1. his marriage to princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen was celebrated in Bavaria and the citizens of Munich were invited to join in the festivities which were held over five days on the fields in front of the city gates.

We would like to celebrate this tradition in Aurora by holding our own condensed version of Oktoberfest by offering the same festive event that all can join in. There may be some traditional German games that are generally feats of strength. For children, there will be a colouring station, face painting and any other games that we can think of.

TRADITIONAL FASHION

It’s very acceptable to attend an Oktoberfest without traditional costume, but if you want to have the full experience, here are some tips.

The dirndl is a traditional dress that is snug on top and flairs out, with an apron and a white blouse. The fascinating thing about the apron is where the bow is located. If it is tied on the right, the wearer is married or in love. If it is tied on the left, the person is single or not spoken for. If the bow is in the middle, it used to mean the girl is pure, but these days, it’s become to mean that the wearer doesn’t want to show if she’s single or not. If the bow is tied in the back, it is traditionally worn that way by children, widows or servers.

Loferls are traditional items usually worn by men on the lower legs that are considered to be “calf warmers” – warm, thick bands that look like the tops of socks. They need to be coordinated with the rest of the gentleman’s Bavarian-styled costume. Lofrels should only be worn with traditional shoes (haferl shoes).

Lederhosen are soft leather shorts, traditionally worn by men. They are short or knee-length and are durable, comfortable and water proof. And of course, t op your costume up with a traditional German Alpine hat!
